Pain Psychology programs are an accepted evidence-based strategy for improving quality of life for people living with chronic pain.

 

Common features of a Psychology of Pain program:

    • Education about chronic pain.
    • Managing unhelpful thoughts that can worsen disability.
    • Helping establish strategies such as exercise and activity management to improve function.
    • Reducing reliance on medications, rest and other unhelpful strategies.
    • Attending to general psychology issues such as mood and anxiety.

Health Psychologist

Health psychologists have extensive post graduate training in health and illness prevention and management. They also have normal clinical training in psychological disorders including anxiety, depression, and trauma (PTSD). Health psychologists meet international standards, and can provide a high standards of care for people chronic conditions including mental health and physical health. They specialise in understanding how psychological, biological, and social factors influence health and illness. Their focus is on promoting health and well-being, managing chronic illness, and supporting individuals in adopting healthier behaviours. Health psychologists are expert with the psychological aspects of pain, helping you improve your quality of life by teaching coping strategies, reducing stress, and supporting healthy lifestyle changes.

Clinical Psychologist

Clinical psychologists hold additional training and expertise in assessing, diagnosing, and treating  a wide range of mental health conditions, relationship and emotional problems. Pain doesn’t only affect your body — it impacts your mind, too. Our Clinical Psychologists specialise in treating the psychological impact of chronic pain and help you address mental health issues such as low mood, anxiety, and trauma that may be exacerbating your discomfort.

At NIPM we can work with you to address the mental health problems associated with pain from commonly arising Adjustment disorders, to more complex conditions such as depression, anxiety and personality change.

Provisional Psychologist

Provisional psychologists are early-career psychologists in the final stages of training before achieving full registration. They provide psychological assessment and intervention under the supervision and guidance of a fully qualified psychologist. If you are seeking compassionate care, at a more affordable price, provisional psychologists may be suitable for you. They are trained in the latest evidence-based techniques and provide therapy under the guidance of experienced professionals, offering you quality support at a lower cost.
